According to reports from Inside Line, Jaguar is currently mulling over a major decision to produce the Jaguar C-X16 sports car based on the earlier concept model displayed at Frankfurt last fall. A clear inclination to green light was shown when global brand director Adrian Hallmark commented in an interview that "Jaguar without a sports car is like Porsche without a 911."Indeed, the British carmaker has been without a sports model in their line-up and thus this would be seen as a big step towards a new branding strategy as well as market segment.
The C-X16 is based on a cut-down version of the current XK's aluminum platform. Hallmark says current C-X16 prototypes weigh around 200kg lesser than the XK, an important reduction when it comes to performance, dynamics and fuel consumption. That being said, it would allow the XK to move up a notch in its marketing position, which would likely be favoured by the carmaker.
If green lighted, the new Jaguar sports car will likely be launched in 2014 or 2015.
