Formula One's only female driver loses an eye after crash

Spanish Formula One test driver for the Marussia team, Maria de Villota has lost her right eye after her car crashed into the rear of a support truck at the end of her first lap. She was testing the car for her team at the Duxford Aerodrome, London on Tuesday. She remains in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery following her accident.De Villota was rushed to a hospital in Cambridge after the accident and underwent surgery for serious head and facial injuries. Marussia team principal John Booth reported with great sadness that, due to the injuries she sustained, Maria has lost her right eye. He also praised the swift response of the paramedic’s team that were on standby at the track and the Neurological and Plastics surgical teams on behalf of Maria’s family.
