If the financial economy is tough, so is the automotive economy. Every automaker in the market now has their eyes set on expansion (not to forget distribution) in order to stay competitive. German automaker Volkswagen is no different, as they got their mind set on launching a Polo-based SUV in 2014. This SUV will reportedly ride on the MQB platform and will be based on the next generation Polo. Size wise, expect it to be the along the lines of the Audi Crosslane Coupe. The model will be a rival to the likes of the Nissan Juke and MINI Countryman.
In terms of styling, the Polo-based SUV will borrow design inspirations from the Cross Coupe which was on show in Tokyo last year. Volkswagen's Head of R&D Ulrich Hackenberg said that the car is going to be adapted to various markets, including a more basic version for emerging markets and a premium variant for the Europeans. The SUV will be offered with both 2WD and 4WD configurations, but Volkswagen expects that most people will prefer the two-wheel drive version.
On a related note, Autocar is saying that Volkswagen will also showcase an Up! based SUV at the Sao Paulo Motor Show later this month and then subsequently a US-spec Passat-based SUV in Detroit next January.
If all the reports pan out, end 2012 and early 2013 might be a SUV breakthrough period for Volkswagen. Stay tuned for more details.
