The new Downtown Line (DTL) will get 15 more trains than previously planned, to shorten waiting times for commuters, especially during the morning and evening peak hours.
In a statement issued today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it had awarded a contract worth $119.2 million for the additional trains. The 42km-long Downtown Line which connects the eastern and north-western stretches was slated to get 73 three-car trains.
Five trains for the first phase of the Line, which opens at the end of this year, have been delivered so far and are undergoing tests.
When the 42km DTL is fully open in 2017, it will have 34 stations.
