There have been heated discussions on the COE policy in recent weeks following news that a revamp to the current system is underway. The Transport Minister has revealed that works are aimed at making car ownership fairer for the population.
Some suggestions that were brought up include reclassification of vehicles according to their power output, instead of the current system where cars are grouped by engine capacity. Additional tax on individuals who owns more than one car is also considered.
The elusive future for the system may have sparked a rush for car shoppers to enter the market, fearing that heavier taxation may be levied.
COE premiums rose across all categories, with Category B seeing the greatest rise at nine percent.
Category A, for cars of engine displacement below 1,600cc, saw premiums increase mildly by $1,840 to end at $64,839 from $62,999 two weeks ago.
Category B, for cars of engine displacement above 1,600cc, saw the greatest hike of $5,604 - from $61,700 to $67,304.
Category E or Open Category ended at $66,701 from $62,301 two weeks ago - an increase of $4,400.
