Renault's Fernando Alonso qualified on pole, ahead of the Red Bull duo of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in second and third respectively. Hamilton qualified fourth with Williams' Nico Rosberg an impressive fifth.
Toro Rosso newcomer Jaime Alguesuari qualified at the back of the grid, promoted to 19th after Massa was taken out of the race. Alguesuari became the youngest ever Grand Prix driver at 19 years old.
At the start of the race, Alonso pulled away, while the McLarens and sole remaining Ferrari made good use of their KERS system to jostle for position. Going into the first corner, it was four abreast with Hamilton on the outside, then Webber, Raikkonen and Vettel. Raikkonen made a swerving move which resulted in contact with Vettel, and the Ferrari driver was investigated by the stewards after the race, who subsequently cleared him of any wrong doing.

The lightly fuelled Alonso was the first to pit on lap 13, but an error by the pit crew saw his front right tyre not being fitted properly, and he lost his tyre later into the lap, forcing him into retirement.
Meanwhile, Hamilton had managed to overtake Webber, and with Alonso's retirement, that had put the Brit into first place, with Raikkonen closing in on the Australian in third.
Webber and Raikkonen both pitted on the same lap, and yet another pit crew error saw Webber released into the path of Raikkonen, with only the quick reflexes of the Finn preventing an accident. Raikkonen had thus gained a position, and was now effectively second.

With Jenson Button only getting two points after finishing seventh, Red Bull Racing has now closed the gap on Brawn GP. Webber also moves up to second in the Driver's Championship with 51.5 points, after his teammate Vettel failed to finish.
In the Constructor's Championship, Brawn now has 114 points, with Red Bull on 98.5. Ferrari moves up to third with 40 points, ahead of Toyota on 38.5, while Hamilton's win moves McLaren ahead of Williams into 5th place.
