Mark Webber and his Red Bull Racing team brilliantly prevented a win by Fernando Alonso in the closing stages of the British Grand Prix claiming his second win of the season, after Monaco. This is also his second win at Silverstone for Red Bull Racing and his ninth victory overall in his career.
The result places Webber closer to championship leader Fernando Alonso by seven points, at 116 to 129 points respectively. Red Bull racing is leading the constructors' championship at 216 points, a massive 64 points ahead of Scuderia Ferrari at 152 points.
Alonso started on pole and had a good start into turn one, ahead of Webber, Michael Schumacher and teammate Felipe Massa, who overtook Sebastian Vettel.
Alonso built a lead of up to 1.3s by lap six, though Webber never stopped hunting bringing the gap to just four-tenths of a second by lap 46, and two laps later Webber using a little help from his DRS overtook Alonso whom started to struggle on the softer tyres compared to Webber on fresher harder ones.At the chequered flag Webber finished the race three seconds clear, with teammate Vettel completing the podium and a further 29 points adrift from Alonso in the championship rankings.
Massa performed his best this race weekend and finished fourth, ahead of former team mate Kimi Raikkonen. The other Lotus piloted by Romain Grosjean fought through the grid and finished sixth despite a lengthy pit stop for a new front wing.
Schumacher who qualified third finished seventh, ahead of Lewis Hamilton whom finished where he started, Bruno Senna and Jenson Button. The McLaren duo struggled in their home turf in front of a sell-out 125,500 crowd and has dropped two points behind Lotus in the constructor’s championship. A disappointed Hamilton cheered fans after the race by performing a few donuts on the track for which BBC presenter Jake Humphrey will be footing out the bill if Hamilton gets fined.Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi finished eleventh and was fined €25,000 (S$39,062) for an unsafe move on his way into the pit box which resulting in him knocking over several of his crew members. His teammate, Sergio Perez failed to finish the race after Pastor Maldonado drove into him on lap 12. Maldonado who won a race earlier this year has been the centre of many incidents on the race track including in Valencia which saw the end of Hamilton’s race.
Perez strongly commented, "Pastor is a driver that doesn't respect the other drivers. He is a very stupid driver. I don't know why the stewards don't take more action against him. He deserves a big penalty. I really hope the stewards will do something. We are risking our lives out there and if they (the stewards) don't do something he will hurt someone. For all the drivers he is very dangerous driver on the circuit.” Maldonado was later handed a €10,000 (S$15,625) fine and was reprimanded for causing the collision.Things were not smooth for Paul di Resta of Force India either, as the Scot made contact with Grosjean on the first lap, causing a puncture and suspension damage. By lap four, he retired from the race. Vitaly Petrov didn't take part in the race, due to an engine failure.
A delighted Webber commented, “It was another great day for us, a great day for me. To win here again is a fantastic feeling. It's a special win for the team, we are a local team based just down the road and it's incredible for them and it's another victory for Renault Sport in the UK and I am very proud. Thanks to all the fans for sticking with us over the last few days.”
“At the end Mark was much quicker than us and he deserves the win so congratulations to him and the Red Bull team, but I am proud of Ferrari's recovery in the last couple of weeks. We have fought for the wins in the last four races. 'Thanks to the fans for coming through the bad weather, I hope they enjoyed it,” commented a positive Alonso
