Mercedes slashes S-Class production: A beginning to its end?

Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to slash production of the S-Class. In this current shape of the automotive world where carmakers are expanding their lineups to grab market shares, a slash in production spells trouble for the S-Class, with fans questioning whether this is a countdown to its demise. Production for the S-Class will be reportedly reduced to one shift at its factory, at least until the next-generation model goes into production in 2013. Meanwhile, the second shift of production will be reassigned to production for the C-Class.
As much as Mercedes-Benz would like to maintain every model in its lineup, the S-Class sales have fallen by 27 percent - in the past eight months - to just 5,227 units, citing factors such as slow sales in China and Europe. This, coupled with the aging of the model, forces a compelling need for the automaker to review the S-Class.
The next-generation model could be crucial to its survival. The 2013 S-Class will feature evolutionary styling which was recently previewed by the Aesthetics S sculpture. Engine options will likely be retained, but there could be a new plug-in hybrid variant with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine and a 60bhp electric motor.
Whether the S-Class can survive its ordeal, will depend on whether its successor will create the demand.
