New red light cameras on trial
04 Feb 2013|11,007 views
The Traffic Police are placing a new generation of cameras on trial, in a bid to tackle a worsening problem - red light beaters. These new cameras will react faster, take sharper images as well as allow the police to download images remotely, providing for faster enforcement efforts and greater efficiency with less manpower.
According to the Traffic Police, the new cameras are being tested at three areas - two along Thomson Road and one in Victoria Street. Motorists who ignore traffic lights are among the top causes of road fatalities and the number of these offenders has been on the surge in the past decade.
The penalty for beating a red light is 12 demerit points and a fine of at least $200.
With the increase in traffic accidents recently, Mr S. Iswaran, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry, said that more speed and red light cameras will be deployed to clamp down on bad driving habits. Plans are also ongoing to tighten the enforcement of speeding offences with new camera technology.
