According to a poll conducted by insurance firm AXA, in February, nearly two-thirds of motorists believe aggressive driving, texting while driving and drinking before getting behind the wheel are some of the reasons they feel less safe on the road nowadays.
According to The Straits Times, AXA polled 458 motorists - mostly private car owners - found 62 percent to believe that the situation had worsened from a couple of years ago. Among these, nearly three-quarter cited 'aggressive drivers' as a major factor.
The poll also revealed the most unsafe form of driving behaviour was found to be drink driving, followed by texting while driving and checking their phones or tablets frequently for updates and notifications.
About 60 percent of the polled admitted to running an amber light followed by exceeding the speed limit by 10km/h and answering the phone without a hands-free set. The paper also reported, more than a quarter also admitted to checking their mobile devices or tablets while driving, mostly to relpy work messages.
Li Choo Kwek-Perroy, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer of AXA Singapore, told the English daily the survey brought out some interesting insights on drivers' perception of road safety and their personal driving behaviour.
Interestingly, majority of drivers still believe law enforcement and stiffer penalties are the greatest motivation to driving safely. Demerit points ranked higher than consideration for the safety of others when it came to driving influences.
The sentiments align with the recent announcement by the Police - as they are planning to install more speed cameras and junction cameras to catch offenders. In addition, the men in blue have also identified 140 roads where new speed cameras may be installed.
Meanwhile, AXA has introduced a free mobile app - AXA Drive - to promote safe driving available for both iOS and Android mobile platform. The app utilises a GPS-based accelerometer sensor (which measures acceleration forces) to monitor a user's driving behaviour and also provides driving tips.
Drivers launch the app at the start of a journey and at the end of it, the app rates their driving skills, based on acceleration, braking and turning intensity.
