Toyota & Daihatsu jointly develops low cost, fuel efficient cars

Japanese carmakers Toyota and Daihatsu have unveiled a joint project at the IIMS, which was held in Indonesia over the past week. In line with the government-initiated program to design a Low Cost Green Car (LCGC), the car is the first automotive product designed locally by an Indonesian.
Daihatsu, the specialist in compact cars, will be tasked to handle the planning, development and production of the Agya and Ayla - the Ayla sold directly under the Daihatsu brand name, but Agya will be re-badged as a Toyota.
By incorporating the technology and brand image of Toyota as one of the World’s biggest automotive manufacturer, the collaboration aims to spruce up the image of the joint product. Likewise, the expertise of Daihatsu will see to the continuous development of fuel-efficient and affordable cars for the mass market in Indonesia. Daihatsu also aims to strengthen its R&D process and infrastructure in Indonesia through involvement in the joint project.
