Starting from 2024, the cast aluminium wheels on your new MINI and BMW will be made from 100% green power.
The move comes as the BWM Group has secured agreements with its wheel suppliers to use only green energy in the energy-intensive electrolysis used in producing aluminium, and in the wheel-casting process.
MINI will lead the transition of the Group to sustainable aluminium wheels, with plans for the marque to use up to make cast light-alloy wheels from up to 70% recycled aluminium in the new MINI Countryman, coming in 2023. This combination of green energy and recycled aluminium could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 80%.
The BMW Group states that the manufacture of wheels has accounted for about 5% supply chain CO2 emissions, which will now be cut in half thanks to the move. The BMW Group procures about 10 million light-alloy wheels per year, 95% of which, are made from cast aluminium. Since 2021, the BMW Group has sourced aluminium from the United Arab Emirates manufactured exclusively using electricity obtained from solar power. The group is aiming to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain by as much as 20% from 2019 levels by 2030.
