The BMW Motorrad GS Trophy is an international competition that takes place every two years, one that sees the best Enduro riders from all over the world compete in gruelling yet exciting challenges over the span of a week.
For the 2022 edition of the GS Trophy held in Albania, qualifiers take place at a national (in 2021) and regional (in 2022) level prior to the international competition. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, Singaporean riders did not have a chance to participate.
Instead, BMW Motorrad Singapore organised the GS Challenge Singapore 2022, hosted in Johor Bahru from 23 to 24 July 2022. Set up using guidelines derived from the international event, the GS Challenge gave 23 participants a chance to test their off-road skills.
And, the top three winners would win a trip to Albania to follow the exact trail of the 2022 GS Trophy. This is an opportunity to ride an original GS Trophy bike across the vast and rugged Albanian terrain, and to experience the exact competition route without the stresses of actual competition!
Day one was a hot and arid affair. With the sun relentlessly blazing down, all 23 participants took part in the qualifying session, tackling a host of off-road obstacles such as the Garage, Figure of Eight, Downhill Braking to a Stop and Turn, Parallel Logs, U-Turn at Full Lock, Slalom, as well as a hillclimb section and a water crossing.
These obstacles tested each contestants capabilities on their various GS models - low-speed manouvering, balance, throttle and brake control, and the ability to tackle different ground surfaces.
The top 10 participants qualified for the Finals on day two, which proved to be a dinstinctly different affair. Because of torrential rain (and some flooding on the event grounds) in the late afternoon on Saturday, Sunday's finals had contestants dealing with significant amounts of mud and water.
It is perhaps fitting that to fully showcase and test the adverturing capabilities of the BMW GS bikes, the finalists had to negotiate many of the same obstacles (but made tighter and thus harder) in notably more slippery conditions. With mud kicking up everywhere, every rider's bike control was put to the ultimate test.
Whether on dirt, mud or even through a water crossing, the participants all proved to be up to the challenge There were also plenty of guests on hand to take in the action. Riding in on a wide-ranging collection of motorcycles (mostly adventure models but not exclusively so), guests had an opportunity to see the various GS models put to the extreme advernture test.
During the GS Challenge Singapore 2022, BMW Motorrad Singapore also showcased the newest model in the lineup - the F 750 GS.
Slated to be officially launched soon, the F 750 GS offers even greater accesiblity to the GS range. With a 76bhp 853cc two-cylinder engine, expanded seat variety including a 'Low Seat' option, as well as the latest in equipment and technology, the new F 750 GS will allow riders to tackle obstacles and adventures such as those seen throughout the GS Challenge Singapore 2022.
