The Straits Times has reported that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is developing a new central bus management system that will relay real-time information between buses and bus stops which will enable commuters to obtain more information on the move. The new system will be implemented progressively from the end of 2015 and will be completed in 2017, revealed Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo in Parliament earlier today.
She was responding to Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Gerald Giam, who had asked whether the LTA will consider using technology on buses and at bus stops to help visually-impaired commuters travel more independently and safely.
In her response, Ms. Teo revealed that the new system will have announcements of the next bus stop, either displayed on buses or delivered in a more targeted way through smart-phone applications and other devices.
Furthermore, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim revealed that the transport authority is looking into providing Wi-Fi access on buses and at bus interchanges.
Satisfaction with public transport has declined in the past few years, due to delays and overcrowding. The Government has taken measures to improve the travel experience.
Providing Wi-Fi at MRT stations reflects its commitment to this end, said Mr Faishal.

Noting that the service is currently being rolled out on a trial basis, Dr. Faishal replied that priority is given to MRT interchange stations with high traffic. He also added that free Wi-Fi service will be available at Khatib station by 2015. Also, if the trial is successful and well received by people, the service will be rolled out at other MRT stations.
