Skirt-chasing the 911s

Just last week, we were given the chance to try out some of Porsche's most recent and potent road machines, including the 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo S, on the Sepang International Circuit.
These cars are fearless track machines that have the natural ability to make grown-up men go weak at their knees. The Turbo moniker, especially, came from a long and illustrious history. We can recall walls full of posters of the all time sports car icon, as much as the car filled childhood dreams - including ours.
For us, meeting the 911s at the track was like attending our secondary school's Prom night once again. It was perhaps one of the most significant highlights in our studying years. What made it so memorable, of course, was the chance to get 'up close' with all the school belles at one go.
First up: The Turbo S. The flagship 911 commands the field with its supreme performance and is brim-filled with clever tech trickeries, which can help her efficiently put down all 560bhp and 700Nm of torque on the tarmac. In short, she is like the Head Prefect who holds authority above every student, and is possibly the smartest and most intellectual girl of the cohort.
And if the Turbo S is the nerdy, yet witty girl-next-door, the GT3 must be the sporty netball captain who looks ever so radiant in her sun-kissed complexion.
Even when dressed in lookalike uniform, you wonder how the GT3 managed to pull it off better than other 911s. She may have a few tricks, such as the fixed rear wing and flared wheel arches (think rolled up sleeves and pinned up skirt, which is a few inches above the knee but goes without notice from the Discipline Master). These are tiny details, but as a whole they make a world of difference.
Free from restraints of traffic and speed limits, the GT3 and Turbo S were free to demonstrate their full prowess on the track. The only limiting factor was, in fact, the skills of each individual driver.
But so effective is the Turbo S' all-wheel drive system and driver aids that most of us managed our best lap times in it. Of course, with almost 90 horses more than the GT3, the Turbo S can easily tear away and reach dizzying speeds in the straights.
The GT3, on the other hand, requires much more from the driver. Like the Prom queen who everyone's trying to date, past track experience will do little to tame this track machine.
With all 475 horses from its 3.8-litre naturally aspirated engine sent to the rear, the GT3 also has the ability to light up its rear tyres at will, and at any corner of the track should you decide to go heavy with your right foot. Of course, with us being novice drivers, the GT3 was extremely tail-happy - as if it had one too many drinks.
Expectedly, our day with the 911s ended on a bittersweet note. Like our Prom night, the 'happiness' with our crushes at the track was short-lived. And we knew from day one that it was going to be tough to pick between these stunning ladies - so we aren't giving any preferential views here.
All we can say is that as the cars were handed back to the instructors, we were once again reminded of the brutal reality that only a few lucky guys would end up dating the high school belles. Needless to say, we weren't one of them.
