Interestingly the managements and ownership of the two companies have not been smooth since the end of World War Two. Remember back in 2008 and 2009 the much smaller Porsche tried to acquire the much larger Volkswagen. Porsche's former CEO, Wendelin Wiedeking, nearly ruined his 18-year career to engineer the deal that almost bankrupted Porsche.
After the argumentative takeover, it was Volkswagen that came to Porsche's back in 2009. Though the deal has been delayed since, it has finally bear fruit and VW takes full ownership of Porsche on August 1st.

If you are sceptical of VW’s knowledge and experience on running luxury brands, may we remind you that Volkswagen owns Bentley, Audi, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and the recently acquired Ducati among an endless list of automobile companies.
German automaker Volkswagen seems to be all set on acquiring the remaining stake of Porsche. Finally.
To the purists, the takeover may spell worries, as they may be wondering where the deal is going to bring Porsche, one of the most prestigious sports car maker in the world. Will it still have the say to its future developments? Especially so considering Porsche's lineup arch-rivalling that of Audi's (one of the many marques under VW's wing).

Unlike the bitter rivalry we have come to see, there have been more than one instance where the both have collaborated. For starters, VW’s supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piech, who is also the son-in-law of the great old Mr. Porsche himself, holds a controlling stake in Porsche AG. The two companies have collaborated on vehicles like the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. While Ferdinand Porsche designed the original Volkswagen Beetle for the Nazi Party in 1930s, the present day Volkswagen was built after the war.
