If you haven't already seen our previous article, your confusion is valid.
AUDI (in all caps, no less) is Audi's premium new EV brand, born from a collaboration between the German car manufacturer and Chinese manufacturer SAIC, and is strictly "China-only".
For clarity to readers of this article, any mention of AUDI will refer to the China-only brand, while Audi will refer to the German brand.
Ahead of the 2025 Auto Shanghai, AUDI debuted its first production model, the E5 Sportback, during the Volkswagen Group Media Night.
The new four-door model is a fully electric fastback that offers a maximum range of 770km and a century sprint timing of 3.4 seconds. Thanks to its ultra-fast 800V charging, it can regain 370km of range in just 10 minutes.
It is built on the new Advanced Digitised Platform and is available in four fully electric variants with either RWD or quattro AWD at outputs of 220kW (295bhp), 300kW (402bhp), 425kW (570bhp), or 579kW (777bhp).
It offers a fresh interpretation of the Audi design language and unexpected nods to Chinese preferences such as circular wheel arches over traditional quattro fenders and the reinterpretation of the familiar Singleframe grille with the new AUDI Light Frame.
The E5 Sportback features a futuristic grille, pronounced shoulders, and a digital surface loop complemented by illuminated logos at the front and rear. In addition, a sleek black loop circles the front and the rear, combining all functional areas - lights, sensors, air curtains, radar, and spoilers - into one cohesive feature.
Inside, the E5 Sportback combines luxurious materials with subtle comfort features. The cabin blends luxury and technology, with the curved AUDI panoramic display shared by driver and passenger integrated with the digital exterior mirrors, while the centre console offers open storage for two phones and 50W wireless charging with active cooling.
Following the E5, two more all-electric AUDI models will be launched in 2026 and 2027, as a continuation of Audi's largest ever product initiative.
