Le Mans is set to become even more interesting with the entry of BMW into the playing field. The BMW M Hybrid V8 will run in the IMSA series from 2023 and the WEC from 2024.
Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH stated that this decision was a milestone for the project. This is especially due to BMW returning to Le Mans after what seems like an eternity - 25 years since BMW last raced at the legendary race event with a prototype.
25 years since BMW raced with the screaming V12 LMR (pictured in white), parked beside the V8 hybrid powered BMW M Hybrid V8 Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport claimed that the schedule for LMDh was very tight and that they had always wanted to focus on one field of application for the first season in 2023. However, their mid-term goal was to race on two fronts with their new BMW M Hybrid V8.
The car has reportedly also rolled out successfully at Dallara in Varano de Melegari. With this motivating factor, the team is now starting intensive test work before the race debut in January 2023 at Daytona.
More European tests are scheduled for August before BMW M Team RLL and a crew from BMW M Motorsport experts start IMSA-specific preperations with testing in the U.S.A from September. M works drivers will be at the wheel, with the decision as to who occupies the cockpits for the 2023 IMSA season to be decided at a later date.
