Quan Yifeng, a Channel 8 television host, knocked down pedestrian, Mr. Raman Selvaraj, as he crossed the road at the junction of Selegie and Sungei road at about 11:20am on the 2nd of July last year. She immediately pulled over and attended to Mr. Raman, who suffered an abrasion to his left elbow and a laceration to the back of his head.
The accident occurred when Quan was driving her 14-year old daughter to school. She stopped at the T-junction of Selegie and Sungei road, and when the light was in her favour, she turned right, but failed to check for pedestrians crossing the road.
According to The Straits Times, the weather was clear and traffic flow was light. Deputy Public Prosecutor, Allison Phua, revealed Quan braked but could not stop in time. Lawyer, David Ng, added Quan was regretful and made no excuses for her actions. Quan was sentenced with a three-month driving ban and fined $800.
The Taiwanese-born Singaporean host, told the English daily that it was her first road accident and she takes responsibility for what happened. "I apologised, tried to calm him down and ensured he sought medical treatment," she said. She compensated the victim with a sum of $1,260.
For her actions, Quan could have been fined $1,000 and jailed for six months for inconsiderate driving. This is Quan's third run-in with the law here. Quan was previously fined $1,000 for a fight with a bowling alley attendant and was also placed on 15 months of probation for committing mischief in a disagreement with a taxi driver back in 1996 and 2011 respectively.
