Deepal S09, six-seater luxury SUV, debuts at Auto Shanghai

China's state-owned Changan Automobile, which takes charge of the Deepal brand that recently launched in Singapore, is continuing its electrified offensive on homeground - one that saw all of its three sub-brands celebrating the public debut of a new model each at the 2025 Auto Shanghai.
Likely to be of most interest to Singaporeans, though not confirmed for international markets yet (nor Singapore's), is the Deepal S09. A three-row, full-size luxury SUV with six seats, the model now marks the flagship of the brand's range.
The S09 marks the current flagship of the Deepal lineup, and is a full-size SUV measuring nearly two metres wide and more than 5.2 metres long
It's got flagship-level presence to match the claim too; at 5,205mm long, 1,996mm wide and 1,800mm tall, the S09 could take on the the likes of the BMW X7 and Audi Q7 in sheer size, and boasts a generous wheelbase of 3,105mm. Interestingly, though, the SUV eschews ostentatious styling for a subtler aesthetic with Deepal's latest design language.
While the locally-available S07 is fully electric, the S09 is a range-extended EV that is equipped with a 40.18kWh battery, which can not only support fast charging at up to 180kW, but also draw additional power from a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine onboard that serves as a generator.
Perhaps the most impressive bits of the car, however, are to be found on the inside.
The car's centre console can slide automatically between the first and second rows, and contains a 10-litre storage box that functions as a fridge
The decision to pursue this narrower route of only six seats (as opposed to also offering a seven-seater variant) may seem puzzling - until you learn about one of the S09's party tricks: Its centre console sits on rails that allow it to slide between the front and second row with just the touch of a button.
The fact that this contains a 10-litre storage box that functions as a fridge means that second row occupants can recline and enjoy their chilled drinks in comfort as they take meetings on the go, or indeed, catch up on their latest favourite Netflix shows via a 21.4-inch drop-down screen.
Speaking of screens, the S09 continues the atypical setup found on the S07 that omits a traditional instrument cluster for a massive 43-inch augmented reality head-up display and large infotainment screen instead. Or should we say, screens.
Screens galore: The S09 gets dual 15.6-inch touch infotainment displays up front, as well as a drop-down 21.4-inch drop down screen in the second row
The S09 gets dual 15.6-inch infotainment displays that gives the front passenger their own range of play with the car's multimedia functions. Based on Sgcarmart's brief interaction with the car, the screens run on a seamlessly integrated operating system, allowing users to swipe fluidly between them, as you would with a two-screen work setup.
One of the final highlights of the S09 is its ability to fit at least six cabin-sized luggage bags in its boot - even with all the seats in place. (Five of them can be squeezed upright into the rear, with the sixth one fitting nicely into the storage area underneath the boot floor.)
Changan Automobile also took the chance at the Auto Shanghai to celebrate the first public showcases of two new models from its other sub-brands, including the Changan Nevo Q07, a plug-in hybrid five-seater SUV with up to 1,400km of range; and the the high-end AVATR 06, a luxury fastback sedan whose most powerful variant is capable of 590bhp and can hit a top speed of 200km/h.
Plug-in hybrid marathoner: The top-end variant of Changan's Nevo Q07 boasts a combined rated range of 1,400km when fully refuelled and recharged
Alongside these production cars, its booth at Auto Shanghai was filled with other elements that will form part of its future mobility lineup: Humanoid robots, robot dogs and even dancing cars.
The state-owned manufacturer is in the midst of an ambitious expansion plan that is seeing it rapidly extend its reach into international markets. Under the Vast Ocean Plan, unveiled in 2023, the company aims to reach cumulative sales of five million cars annually under all its brands, out of which 1.2 million will comprise export territories.
