Koenigsegg supercars are back in Singapore

Swedish supercar brand Koenigsegg is back after a brief stint here in the 2005, when a group of businessmen thought the high end car had a ready audience here. Motorway, the company which holds the Ssangyong franchise and Luxe Car Rentals (which rents out superlative cars such as Ferraris and Porsches), has secured the rights to represent Koenigsegg here.

Back in 2005, not a single unit of the Koenigsegg CCR - priced at more than $2 million each - was sold. The lofty price aside, potential buyers were also uncertain about aftersales support. The fact that the supercar held the world speed record of 388km/h back then did not help much.
Powered by a 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing up to 1,124bhp (R version) and in excess of 1,100Nm of torque from 3,500rpm, Koenigsegg's return is marked by the availability of a new range - the carbon fibre mid-engined Agera.
Equipped with a seven-speed dual- clutch autobox, it is said to be capable of hitting 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and a maximum of about 440km/h. The latter, if verfied, will make it the world's fastest car.
It is also one of the world's most expensive cars, with the Agera R retailing for around US$1.7 million. If registered in Singapore, it will be around $5.5 million. This will make it the most expensive car in Singapore, surpassing the 700bhp Pagani Huayra, which was last priced at $3.68 million.
But with the new tiered-taxation system, the Huayra will now be close to $5 million. According to The Straits Times, the authorised agent - EuroSports Auto - said that the new pricing made the car unviable here, and the three cars pre-booked will now be diverted to either Malaysia or Indonesia.
While observers reckon that the market may be slightly more receptive to such a high end car today, it is one thing to part with $2 million for a supercar such as the LaFerrari, and quite another to fork out over $5 million for a relatively unknown nameplate - even if it is the world's fastest car.

According to The Straits Times, the first cars have arrived at the port, and preparations are underway for an official launch in the middle of next month.
