Lamborghini is supporting Ducati's commitment to guaranteeing a higher level of safety for motorcyclists by providing a Urus for the motorcycle manufacturer to use for trial simulations.
The high-performance SUV saw action at a demonstration event organised at the Lausitzring race track in Germany which showcased the effectiveness of the motorbike-car connectivity systems being developed by the Connected Motorcycle Consortium.
The motorbike-to-car communication system could offer advance warning to both riders and drivers that they are approaching a dangerous situation
This consortium, of which Ducati joined in 2016 when it was founded, is an international association of leading manufacturers of two-wheeled vehicles that aims to include motorbikes in the future of connected mobility to improve the safety of motorcyclists. The consortium states that while car manufacturers have been developing Vehicle to Vehicle communication technologies for years, it aims to also add information sent by motorbikes into this ecosystem so that the technology can be utilised by both drivers and riders.
Ducati is currently developing the system to offers riders additional warning about danger that may be oncoming. This is currently being done by an additional screen on the motorbike. The system was demonstrated to be capable of warning drivers of approaching motorcycles if both the motorbike and car is approaching an intersection with reduced visibility at the same time.
The system is also able to warn motorcyclists at an intersection where both the car and motorbike are traveling on the main road but in opposite directions, and the car wants to turn left (for left-hand drive environments). Finally, the system was able to warn both the driver and motorcyclist once both have turned on their indicators in a situation when a motorbike in a line of traffic wants to overtake a large vehicle in front of it and which in turn has a car ahead of it that wants to make a left turn but is not visible to the motorcyclist.
