Motorists can now apply for the Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) pass in Singapore. Holders of the MACS pass need not fill up immigration cards or have their passports stamped. All they need to do is scan the pass at checkpoints. The pass is a sticker attached to the passport that is embedded with a RFID chip.
Previously, applicants could apply for these passes only at MACS service counters in Johor, Malaysia. Now, the Malaysian government has extended the service to motorists here. Travellers can apply via their vendor, Singapore company Third Link, at their counter in the Orchard Parade Hotel.
In a statement yesterday, Third Link said that the current locations have proven to be a minor inconvenience as the designated parking areas in the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) are limited. "Moreover, first-time applicants coming by car may not be familiar with the location," it said.
Applicants can submit their passports at Third Link's Tanglin office before 2:00pm and collect it by 4:00pm the next day. The pass will cost $35 in total - which includes a $15 charge by the Malaysian government and a $20 service fee from Third Link.
Third Link's office is open on weekdays from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
