The new powerplant is made from aluminium, and features the AMG Cylinder Management system that can shut off four-cylinders from 800 to 3,600rpm to improve fuel efficiency. Mercedes-Benz says that the switch from four to eight-cylinder operation is “immediate and imperceptible” taking a mere 30 milliseconds at 3,600rpm.
The German carmaker adds that as a result of the new Cylinder Management system, the SLK 55 AMG is able to return a fuel consumption figure of 8.5L/100km, a 30% improvement over the outgoing model. The all new SLK 55 AMG roadster is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The new engine, codenamed M152, is based on the M157 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo powerplant that is used in the E 63 AMG, CLS 63 AMG, S 63 AMG and CL 63 AMG. The naturally-aspirated engine gains an additional 62bhp and 30Nm of torque from the previous SLK 55 AMG's unit, for a new power output of 422bhp and 540Nm.
