Remember the MINI Electric Strip which Fashion Designer Paul Smith stripped down to bare metal?
Well, a new MINI by Paul Smith is now in the works, and this time, it's a classic Mini that's set to get the Paul Smith touch.
Most of the buttons on the one-off car have been removed, replaced instead by a handphone holder next to the removable steering wheel And this classic Mini is no stranger to Paul Smith either, being a MINI Paul Smith Edition, which was limited to just 1,800 examples.
The prototype for this special edition car was painted a bright blue based on a swatch taken from one of Paul Smith's favourite shirts, and this new car being developed retains this unmistakable shade pairing it along with a lime green battery box which recalls a 1990s colour palette
And yes, it has been converted to run on electric power. All this is thanks to the work from the engineers from Recharged Heritage Limited, which have installed in this example a 96bhp electric motor into the special car, merging classic Mini with modern, local emissions-free driving.
A lime green battery box supplies current to a 96bhp electric motor in this latest collaborative effort from MINI and Paul Smith This eco-friendly approach, as we have seen applied in the MINI Electric Strip, also extends into the interior of this classic Mini. Here, a host of unecessay trim pieces have stripped out to reveal the bare bodyshell. The car thus sports an unclad floor pan, covered only by rustic floor mats made of recycled rubber.
A host of buttons on the dashboard have also been removed, and instead all controls can be accessed via a smartphone, which find its place thanks to a magnet located next to the steering wheel.
This steering wheel has also been made into a removable item in order to facilitate getting in and out of the car, described by MINI as a design quip symbolic of Paul Smith's trademark wit.
The new Mini by Paul Smith will make its premier at the Salone Del Mobile 2022 exhibition in Milan, Italy.
