New BMW X2 grows larger and gets new all-electric option

BMW has revealed its new X2 compact Sports Activity Vehicle alongside a new, all-electric iX2.
The second generation car is now 194mm longer, 21mm wider, and 64mm taller compared to its predecessor.
Up front, the car gets head lights similar in shape to those on the X1, which are available as adaptive LED items. These sit at either side of a hexagonal BMW kidney grille, which can be specified with the BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting.
Adding to the sporty image of the of the BMW X2 are flared wheel arches and muscular shoulders. The car also gets, of course, a gently flowing roofline, which ends at the rear in a Gurney-style spoiler. The rear light design of the BMW X2 is also said to be model specific.
Pick the performance-oriented BMW X2 M35i xDrive, and you'll get added sporty touches including a front grille complete with horizontal bars and an M-specific spoiler. The X2 M35i also gets a M-specific front splitter, as well as two pairs of exhaust tailpipes that are integrated into its rear apron.
In the cabin, the BMW X2 gets the firm's Curved Display, comprising of a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control display. This screen is said to run BMW's Operating System 9, which now places the navigation system's map view alongside individually configurable graphics right at the home screen. A host of function icons also appear in a vertical arrangement on the driver's side of the display.
BMW states that this new operating system thus gets a flat menu structure which will make it easier for users to access their desired functions and settings.
On the handling front, the components of the X2's single-joint spring strut axle at the front have been developed almost completely from scratch, while the three-link rear axle is partnered by a rear-axle subframe for precise wheel guidance even under high lateral acceleration. Adaptive M suspension is being offered as an option for all model variants.
The range of petrol-burning options for the BMW X2 at launch starts with the X2 sDrive20i, which gets a 1.5-litre three-cylinder paired with 48V mild hybrid technology that develops a system total of 168bhp and 280Nm of torque. This drivetrain will see the Sports Activity Vehicle completing the century sprint in 8.3 seconds.
The performance-oriented X2 M35i xDrive, meanwhile, comes with a 296bhp 2.0-litre engine that develops a total of 400Nm of torque. This variant will complete the century sprint in 5.4 seconds.
An all-electric iX2 xDrive30 is also being offered, which will utilise one electric motor at the front axle and one at the rear. The car delivers a total of 308bhp and 494Nm of torque. This car also comes with a 64.8kWh that allows it to deliver a WLTP range of 449km. This all-electric iX2 will accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds, and go on to reach an electronically governed top speed of 180km/h.
The new BMW X2 and new BMW iX2 will both be produced on a single assembly line at BMW Group Plant Regensburg.
