Polestar 2 to join Traffic Police patrol fleet from 2024
03 Nov 2023|4,781 views
From 2024, the Traffic Police (TP) will patrol Singapore's expressways in the Polestar 2, an all-electric fastback from the Swedish automotive brand. 19 of these new cars will join the TP patrol fleet as its first electric vehicles. This move is consistent with the national agenda to switch towards cleaner energy vehicles by 2040.
The model that the TP will be getting is the facelifted version, which was made available in Singapore in September 2023. This is the long range, dual-motor all-wheel drive variant with an 82kWh battery. On a single charge, it can cover a range of about 568km (WLTP-rated). The Polestar 2 is a car that's fairly fit for the purpose it was chosen, given that it can reach 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 205km/h.
Before they hit the expressways, the Polestar 2s will be retrofitted with the necessary police equipment and livery.
The TP had called for a public tender in October 2022, which closed on 31 January 2023. Besides Wearnes Automotive - the local agent for Polestar - other bidders include Hyundai with its Ioniq 5, BYD with its Seal and BMW with the i4 and iX1. Wearnes Automotive's winning bid closed at around $3.8 million, tailgated by the other bid values, excluding Hyundai's.
The Polestar 2 will replace ageing highway patrol vehicles currently, which are powered by internal combustion engines. Of these are the BMW 325d, and Subaru WRX, Volvo S40 and Volvo S80. The cars are exempted from tax and do not require Certificates of Entitlement (COEs).
