Land Rover has announced that prototypes of its electric Range Rover are currently undergoing testing in a host of challenging test locations including within the Arctic Circle as well as in the searing deserts of the Middle East.
The firm states that the current tests are focused on the capabilities of its battery and electric drive unit in extreme temperatures that reach as low as -40 degrees Celsius. Both the battery and electric drive unit of the electric Range Rover will be assembled in-house by Jaguar Land Rover - a first for the brand.
The firm is additionally testing the car's all-electric propulsion system on the frozen lakes of Sweden in order to ensure that the vehicle and brand's renowned performance on low-grip surfaces remains unparallelled. The new vehicle will now manage wheel slip directly via its individual electric drive control unit instead of a traditional anti-brake system, and this new system is said to be able to reduce the torque at each wheel within a reaction time of as little as one millisecond, from around 100 milliseconds.
