Service 167 to stay for now, but at 30-minute intervals

With the spate of grumblings on the ground, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is putting off its decision to terminate bus service 167.
In an earlier announcement, LTA had said it would discontinue Service 167 from 10 December 2023, as its route runs parallel to rail services on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). The move is aimed at reducing duplication of services and enabling a redistribution of resources to better serve commuters.
LTA's initial announcement to terminate Service 167 invited unhappiness from many of the affected commuters, with many citing a resultant longer travelling time
The decision was met with much unhappiness on LTA's Facebook page, with many claiming that the change will make them worse off. A commonly cited reason is longer travelling time because residents, especially the elderly, will have to walk to the MRT station to take the train.
However, LTA is not oblivious to the grouses. In a media reply published today, the authority said it will retain Service 167 for now, but operate it at 30-minute intervals throughout the day.
It also added that the amendments to Services 121 and 859, and increase in frequency of Service 980, will proceed as previously announced.
In explaining that it understands some commuters may need more time to adjust and try out new travel routes, particularly for Service 167 where the change is more extensive, LTA has pushed back the adjustments to take effect from 17 December 2023.
Online chatter shows that many welcome LTA's announcement to keep Service 167 despite the reduced frequency.
LTA further explained that it will continue to review our bus network and reallocate finite resources as new transport options become available. Its decisions are guided by reviews that ensure our limited resources are used optimally.
Prior to making amendments to Services 75, 162/M and 167, the authority had studied the availability of alternative services and ensured that bus alternatives remained available.
