Locally built eco-cars went the distance at this year's Shell Eco-Marathon Asia, with Singapore teams taking home three awards, reported The Straits Times.
At the annual competition, teams design and race eco-friendly cars to see which can cover the most distance on one kilowatt of energy, or one litre of fuel.
Team EcoTraveller from the Institute of Technical Education was placed third in the battery electric prototype category, clocking 324km - almost equivalent to driving up and down the Pan-Island Expressway eight times.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) team Nanyang E Drive clinched the competition's technical inno-vation and safety awards for its NTU Venture 9. Team Manager Winston Tan, 27, said the Venture had a "unique tilting mechanism adopted from motorcycle racing, where racers would lean left or right during sharp turns to maintain their handling and speed".
The eco-marathon was held in Manila from last Thursday to Sunday, and featured 127 teams from 17 countries.
