Tesla to launch all-new Roadster in 2014

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the Silicon Valley-based electric car company’s plans to Autocar magazine, and the next models to be launched are the Model S luxury sedan, as well as a performance version of the RAV4 EV that has been jointly-developed with Toyota.

Tesla is also working on a crossover electric vehicle that is based on the Model S, while upcoming plans include a compact executive sedan rival to the BMW 3-Series, as well as an all-new Roadster that will replace the current model in 2014.

Musk said that the second generation of the electric-powered sports car will no longer be based on the Lotus Elise, but on a “third-generation, more mass-market platform for cars like a 3-Series and the new Roadster.” Despite posting losses in 2010, Musk is positive about Tesla’s future. “Bob Lutz has said that the Roadster prompted GM to do the Chevrolet Volt”, he said. “We’re trying to change the industry.”
