The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team continued its championship-winning form, taking a one-two finish at the inaugural round of the Americas Rallycross Championship at the world-famous Silverstone Circuit in England.
Tanner Foust took victory ahead of teammate Scott Speed and an international field of competitors on the 0.96km dirt and tarmac track. Foust was nearly untouchable in his Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle Rallycross, scoring top-three finishes in each of the weekend's four qualifying rounds.
The three-time rallycross champion took an easy victory in his Semifinal race, setting up a pole starting position for the Final.
A strong launch propelled Foust to an early lead, which he protected throughout the race, setting a series of quick laps to take the first checkered flag of the season.
Reigning rallycross champion, Scott Speed, had a more challenging path to the podium, receiving a minor setback in the second qualifying round after contact with another competitor. Otherwise, the Oberto Circle K Beetle Rallycross finished second or higher, winning his Semifinal heat and starting next to Foust on the front row of the Final.
Like Foust, Speed also had a good launch but fell back through the normal first-lap pushing and shoving. He opted to take the longer Joker Lap just at the completion of his first circuit and set about catching the leaders. Through the Beetle Rallycross's superior quickness and handling, Speed moved back up through the field but was unable to catch Foust, settling for a second-place finish.
With their top performances, the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross drivers sit atop the provisional championship standings and will hope to extend their lead when Americas Rallycross is back in action this July at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
