Volkswagen of America, Inc. has announced today that the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been awarded a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with High Beam Control (Light Assist), while the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R came through from the battery of tests with a Top Safety Pick+ award.
The firm states that the 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R both earned 'good' ratings in the six crashworthiness evaluations. The Front Assist system - standard on all Golf models in the U.S.A - received a 'superior' rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an 'advanced' rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The LED head lights on both cars - available High Beam Control (Light Assist), and standard on the Autobahn trim GTI as well as the Golf R, received an acceptable rating.
Volkswagen's Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist) is intended to warn drivers of potential frontal collisions (Forward Collision Warning) with vehicles and pedestrians, and in some cases provide automatic braking assistance (Autonomous Emergency Braking). New for 2022 in the U.S.A, the system can now detect cyclists or pedestrians traveling parallel to the vehicle and alert the driver if they turn into the vehicle's path.
In addition to Front Assist, other standard driver assistance features offered on the 2022 Golf models include Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor) and Rear Traffic Alert. Volkswagen's IQ.Drive technology is standard for Golf models in the U.S.A, and enables Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop and Go and Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System).
