Volkswagen claims that the Up! Lite is the most fuel-efficient car in the world, with a quoted figure of 2.44 litres of diesel per 100km, although the Up! Lite looks to be a revised version of the L1 concept car that Volkswagen unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Up! Lite is a diesel-powered hybrid, with two power source. The first is a 2-cylinder 800cc diesel engine that produces 51bhp and 120Nm of torque. This is mated to an electric motor with 14bhp, powered by a lithium-ion battery. Together, both power sources contribute to give a final power output of 65bhp.
The car also features fuel-saving technological features like brake regenerative technology, a stop/ start system and a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Combined with its light 695kg weight, the Up! Lite can achieve its impressive fuel consumption figure, while having a range of 800km from its 20-litre diesel tank. While the power figures seem puny, the Up! Lite is claimed to be able to go from 0-100km/h in 12.5 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 160km/h.
The concept car is constructed mainly from aluminium, steel and carbon fibre, and measures 3800mm long, 1400mm tall and 1600mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 2450mm. Safety features include ESP and one rear and two side cameras to replace mirrors.
Exterior features include front fog lights, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch aluminium and carbon fibre wheels and LED rear lights, while the interior has a 5.7-inch touch screen, an MP3 player, an Internet connection and a telephone.
