ver 60 MyCarForum (MCF) members, along with their partners and family, gathered at the Hyundai showroom last Friday night to attend the MCF Hangout with Hyundai. The star of the event was
the brand new Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid - the MCF Hangout was an opportunity for guests to get a much deeper insight into the car's development, as well as to learn about the car's road-going capabilities.
Being the first hybrid offering from Hyundai, the Ioniq has to be considered a relatively unknown entity to most Singaporean drivers. As such, Julian Kho, Editor of sgCarMart, was on hand for a presentation about the Ioniq. In the presentation, he talked about some of the key technologies that underpinned the development of the Ioniq, as well as sharing his experience of driving the car over a period of three days.
Throughout the event, guests also had the chance to test drive the full range of Hyundai models. These include the new Elantra and the Tucson Turbo. Of course, most attention was clearly being lavished at the Ioniq, with guests eagerly waiting their turn throughout the night. There was certainly a palpable sense of surprise as many of the guests initially pulled away from the carpark in virtual silence, with some guests wearing a look of distinct bewilderment.

The event also saw a lucky draw take place, with several MCF members taking home consolation prizes of air purifiers. The three grand prizes were complimentary weekend drives in Hyundai models, specifically the Elantra, the Ioniq and the Tucson.
In line with the theme of electrification, e-scooter merchant Fabulous Scoot was also present during the event, showcasing a selection of Speedway e-scooter models.
The Hyundai Ioniq marks a clear first for the brand - it is the first car in the world designed to accommodate three different alternative-fuel drivetrain options. Available locally in Hybrid guise, the Ioniq is also available with a fully electric, as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The Ioniq Hybrid features Hyundai's new Kappa 1.6-litre GDI, direct injection petrol, four-cylinder engine producing 139bhp and 146Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 32kW (44bhp) electric motor.
The car is also equipped with several high-tech features usually only found in more upmarket brands, including radar cruise control, lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking. Furthermore, the Ioniq has a wireless charging bay that can be used to charge Qi-enabled smartphones.

But arguably the Ioniq's distinguishing characteristic is in how 'normal' or 'typical' it sets out to be. It offers a more-than-practical 443 litres of boot space, enough cabin space to comfortably seat a family of five, and a low-key exterior design that easily passes off as a typical compact family sedan. Everything from the layout of the interior equipment to the unfussed simplicity of the driving experience is tailored to offer drivers a simple and approachable experience - quite simply, the Ioniq is designed to be a car that you can jump in and drive off, as most guests at the event did.
To find out more about the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and to arrange a test drive, you should head down to the Hyundai showroom at 253 Alexandra Road #01-01 Singapore (159936). Alternatively, you can call up authorised distributor Komoco Motors at 6475 8888 for more information.
