Selling and not changing with the all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge

Bjorn Annwall, Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy CEO of Volvo Cars, said that it's crucial Volvo sells who it is to consumers instead of changing itself, so that what the brand will get will eventually be quality over quantity.
For a brand that isn't as popular as Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, that's quite an arrogant statement. But, and there's always a but, it's arguably a bold and encouraging one.
I left the room at Volvo Cars HQ thinking about that statement he made, and for several days, mind you. In fact, now that I am writing this story, that's the first darn thing that comes to my mind. I mean, if I could sell instead of changing myself, perhaps my kids would want me more than their mother... and that brings me to the Volvo C40 Recharge - Volvo's very first electric-only model.
Makes you feeling young
See, I have already reviewed this car before and my opinion about the C40 is absolutely positive, except the fact that I would rather have the Volvo XC40 Recharge instead. Having three little rascals means that a sloping roofline isn't quite as reasonably spacious, even if the kids are as pint-sized as their father. But space is now an earnest consideration for me.
Yes, there is no hiding the fact that having a swooping roofline and a slightly hunkered stance make the C40 Recharge a car that's highly appealing and desirable. It makes the driver look young and perhaps even dangerous when you walk up the car to unlock it. There's that sense of style, that sense of passion and definitely that sense of matured hooliganism. And I quite like that.
I mean, if I were to own a Volvo XC60, a car that's equally capable to the Audi Q3, BMW X3, Jaguar F-PACE and Mercedes-Benz GLC, and I happened to catch a glimpse of the Volvo C40 Recharge, it'll be like holding my wife's hand and eyeballing a sweet young chick who has all the right proportions at the right places!
Not that I'll ever attempt to do something like that unless I want the kids to start eyeballing me in an absolute repulsive manner. But that's how the electric crossover would make me feel, and there's just something about a car that can make you feel young and adventurous.
Go to match its show
Of course, it isn't all just aesthetics. I mean, my wife is a beautiful and sexy lady, but I, like many sensible men, obviously wouldn't have married my woman if she was all show with no go.
In a way, the C40 Recharge has that attitude that matches its looks. It's no slow coach, that's for sure, and the linear torque means acceleration is immediate enough for all on board to go "woah!!!". But I reckon it's a little more than that. After spending an entire day with it on slippery surfaces and snowy grounds, the C40 Recharge comes across as a car that's daring, determined and yet dependable.
I would like to think of the car as myself, but that would be a big fat lie not just to you but to me as well. Fact is I don't have 402bhp and 660Nm of torque from the word go. I've been hitting the gym and running regularly, but I'll never be able to hit the 100km/h in 4.7 seconds. And even if for some miraculous reason that I could, I sure as hell wouldn't be able to control my lateral movements as well as the C40 around corners.
Selling, not changing
The rear of the C40 is a result of Volvo believing in itself and will sell instead of change itself for the sake of quality over quantity So in more ways than one, the Volvo C40 Recharge didn't really change itself to fit the consumers' needs and wants. Like all Volvos, it still has heated seats and steering wheel to keep you warm, has one of the best benches in the business and has a design that's well thought out, allowing form to meet function without coming across as gimmicky or trying too hard.
So perhaps, just perhaps, I should start thinking about selling instead of changing myself. After all, it's always quality over quantity, no? I mean, as much as I'd hate to admit it, this could well be the only way my kids would want me more than their mother...
