An accident between a tipper truck and a car was reported yesterday - a year after a similar heavy vehicle struck down and killed two brothers at the same junction. The police were alerted to the accident at the junction of Tampines Street 45 and Tampines Avenue 9 just before noon.
According to The Straits Times, the female driver of the silver car and a man were conveyed to Changi General Hospital in a conscious state, while the tipper truck driver is aiding with investigations.
Tampines GRC MP, Baey Yam Keng, remarked the crossing is a 'cause for concern' although it is not listed as a 'black spot' by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). A black spot is an area marked by LTA where there have been more than 15 accidents resulting in death or injuries in three years.
Jamaliah Jamil, a resident of the area told the English daily that the front of the car was smashed in but the truck looked intact. She also added that she avoids crossing the junction with her two children.
Last year, in the wake of the concrete truck tragedy, Mr. Baey managed to re-route heavy vehicles from almost 80 percent of Tampines school zones and earlier in the month aided to add four speed humps on Tampines Avenue 9. Additionally, the LTA will lower the speed limit to 50km/h from 60km/h.
Mr. Baey tied the heavier presence of heavy vehicles at the junction to ongoing nearby construction sites. He told The Straits Times he will consult the authorities regarding the matter and fundamentally prevent future accidents.
