Vettel managed to pull away at the start of the race on Sunday however, as the Silverstone track dried out. And the defending World Champion stormed into a commanding lead as the rest battled out for position, giving the race an all-too-familiar look like most of the races this season.
Things started to unravel during the second set of pit stops though, around lap 28, when a delay during Vettel’s stop thanks to a faulty wheel gun saw the young German getting passed for position by both Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, with Vettel dropping into third.
Despite that setback, the German fought back to snatch second place from Hamilton, who was running out of fuel. Hamilton then saw himself passed by Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber for third, and had to fight off a late challenge from Ferrari’s Felipe Massa for fourth position. Hamilton’s McLaren teammate Button had worse luck, as a misplaced wheel nut following his final pit stop saw the Briton retire in front of his home crowd.
Alonso managed to hold onto his lead in front though, and clinch his and the Ferrari team’s first victory of the 2011 Formula One season. Sebastian Vettel finished in second, ahead of his teammate Mark Webber, who backed off from making a late challenge under orders from the Red Bull team. Lewis Hamilton clung on to fourth despite a very desperate late charge from Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg, Sauber’s Sergio Perez, Renault’s Nick Heidfeld, Michael Schumacher of Mercedes and Jaime Alguersuari of Toro Rosso rounded off the top 10 finishers.
In the Drivers’ Championship, Sebastian Vettel is still in the lead with 204 points, 80 ahead of his teammate Mark Webber in second. Fernando Alonso’s victory in Silverstone saw him leap up to third in the standings with 112 points, while the two McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are now joint fourth with 109 points.
In the Constructors Championship, Red Bull Racing hold a commanding 110 point lead, with 328 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes’ 218. Ferrari lies third on 164 points, while Mercedes GP and Renault are fourth and fifth with 68 and 65 points respectively.
While Sebastian Vettel held a commanding lead in the Drivers’ Championship going into the race, qualifying on Saturday provided an indication that it was not going to go all the German’s way, as the wet British weather contrived to give Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber pole position for only the second time this season. Ferrari’s duo of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa qualified in third and fourth, while McLaren-Mercedes had a disappointing session, with Jenson Button in fifth and Lewis Hamilton only qualifying tenth.
