Bentley has unveiled its third coachbuilt model of the modern era, following the success of the Bacalar barchetta and Batur coupe: The all-new Batur Convertible. Only 16 units will be built, each handcrafted over the course of several months at the marque's carbon neutral factory in Crewe.
Crafted by Mulliner, Bentley's in house bespoke division, the Batur Convertible features an innovative design DNA first introduced in its coupe sibling. It is said that this DNA will guide the design of Bentley's future cars.
The architecture of the Batur Convertible has allowed Mulliner's designers to create an overall machine blending the design of the Bacalar and Batur with the usability of a convertible. On top of that, the designers, inspired by the design of the Bacalar, have chosen a 'wrap around cockpit' to highlight the two-seater character.
One highlight is the dramatic 'airbridge' found behind the seats and tapered cowls at the rear hark back. Beyond serving an aesthetic purpose, this also provides a semi-enclosed luggage compartment behind the front seats. The convertible roof can be deployed and stowed in just 19 seconds, with the car travelling at speeds of up to 50km/h.
Each Batur Convertible will be co-created alongside Mulliner, ensuring the designs are individual and limited only by the customer's imagination.
Not only are customers able to pick from a huge palette of colours and finish for almost every surface of their Batur Convertible, they are also able to opt for hand-painted graphics for the exterior. On top of this, they are able to personalise their Airbridge, tonneau cover and roof materials, complementing their cabin and exterior.
In the cabin specifically, drivers are able to opt for a highly exclusive option of 3D-printed rose gold, which can be fitted on key driver touch points such as the Bentley Drive Mode Selector, encircling the Start/Stop button, and used to change chassis modes.
Rose gold can also be applied to Bentley's iconic Organ Stop vent controls, and as an insert on the steering wheel. These unique parts are crafted in collaboration with goldsmiths in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham. The collaboration is said to highlight Bentley's ability to combine new, advanced manufacturing technologies with more traditional materials and finishing techniques.
Each of the Batur Convertibles will be fitted with Bentley's famed W12 engine. This unit gives each car 739bhp, and 1,000Nm of torque. Compared to the first iteration of the W12, the current version provides the vehicle with 40% more power, with a 25% improvement in fuel economy.
The engine is paired with Bentley's eight-speed double-clutch transmission alongside a sports exhaust, providing a soundtrack keeping with the level of performance. While the entire exhaust system is made of titanium, the finishers sport a special touch: They are 3D-printed in titanium.
