BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo gets xDrive

The first model in the 5-Series Gran Turismo range to get the xDrive all-wheel-drive system will be the 530d xDrive GT and 550i xDrive GT, which will go on sale in June. After that, the 535d xDrive GT and 535i xDrive GT models will hit markets in September.

All powerplants in the 5-Series Gran Turismo xDrive remain the same, including the twin-turbo V8 engine in the 550i xDrive GT that produces 402bhp, and the 535d xDrive GT's unit which churns out 295bhp.

The xDrive system was originally developed for use on BMW's off-roaders such as the X3 and X5, but has now been applied to other models in the range, such as selected versions of the 3 and 7-Series. It works by continuously distributing power electronically to the correct axle and wheels at all times.
