BMW and Rimac ink partnership on high-voltage EV batteries

As fully electric MINIs and BMWs continue to zip off assembly lines, the BMW Group and Rimac Technology - the tech arm of Croatia-based Rimac Group - have announced a long-term partnership.
The two firms state that this new collaboration will be entered on the development of high-voltage battery technology - although what sorts of models have been outlined remain unclear for now (the press release only states "selected battery-electric vehicles"). BMW and Rimac also added that they believe their respective strengths and expertise will "complement each other in a productive way".
Rimac Group, as you may know, is responsible for one of the world's most powerful electric hypercars today: The quad-motor Rimac Nevera.
The Croatian brand, founded by 36-year old Mate Rimac, is focused entirely on building EVs, and recently entered a merger with fellow hypercar-maker, Bugatti. Rimac is currently also under the partial stewardship of Porsche.
In turn, Rimac Technology - a sub-arm under the Group - calls itself a Tier 1 supplier, whose portfolio comprises high-voltage battery packs, e-axles, and also electronics and software. Produced in-house, the company's products are purported to offer advanced technology with an apparently high degree of customisation.
Now, Rimac is hoping that the new tie-up with BMW will catapult Rimac Technology from a niche player to a high-volume seller. The company has seen steady growth in recent times, and recently opened its Rimac Campus 16km north of the Zagreb city centre.
On the other hand, BMW Group's increasing foray into electrification should no longer be foreign. The company states that it aims to cement its leading position in the premium electric mobility sector, with BEVs set to account for more than 50% of global sales before 2030.
The debut of the BMW's sixth-gen eDrive technology is slated soon - although BMW has been quick to note that this will be separate from the strategic cooperation with Rimac.
The two firms have added that more details will be revealed in time regarding the scope and content of the partnership, as well as how exactly it will materialise.
