The 1.6-litre four-cylinder develops 184bhp with the help of a twin-scroll turbocharger that is not only powerful but offers efficiency for its class. The new 2.0-litre engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology provides low fuel consumption and emission figures. The 245bhp four-cylinder turbocharged unit powers a range of cars in the current BMW fleet.
The 3.0-litre twin turbocharged in line six powertrain, whose technology has already wowed the judges several times previously in 2007 and in 2008, took the overall prize in the Engine of the Year Awards. At 340bhp, this high-revving powertrain has reached its highest output level.
The throaty 4.0-litre V8 found in the M3 has won for the fifth time in a row, with a peak output of 420bhp and outstanding thrust yet providing remarkable efficiency thanks to the Auto Start-Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and other Efficient Dynamics technologies.
With a displacement range of 1.6 to 4.0-litres with an output range from 184bhp to 420bhp, comprising two four-cylinder, an eight-cylinder and a straight-six engine, won four out of eight categories.
The winners were selected by an international panel of judges made from 76 motoring journalists representing 36 countries. The awards were presented in Germany during the Engine Expo trade fair.
