Talking at the Automotive News Congress in Spain, BMW sales chief Ian Robertson divulged these details. Given the flagship status of 5-Series saloons in the German carmaker's line up, the automaker was somewhat convinced of good sales but these numbers have completely taken BMW by surprise.
In the US market, BMW phased out the old 5-Series earlier than originally planned to pave way for the 2010 model. The carmaker is now busy ramping up the production capacity at its Dingolfing plant in Germany.
Strong demand in the US and other markets will help the company in putting up sales numbers in excess of the one million mark. "The US is coming back more strongly than expected," quipped Robertson at the sidelines of the conference. With this, the automaker now hopes of achieving sales growth of "strong single digit".
The vehicles, priced north of US$50,000 come with options of four petrol and two diesel engines. The 2010 5-Series line-up also marks the first year when all models come fitted with BMW's fuel saving technologies. The EfficientDynamics technologies include auto tranny, electric power steering, regenerative braking, active air flaps control and gearshift point indicator.
