The non-profit Berthold Leibinger Foundation has awarded Dr. Helmut Erdl (banner, right) and Dr. Abdelmalek Hanafi (banner, left) of the BMW Group the second innovation prize for the development and implementation of a new high-brightness white light source that enhances the visibility of drivers.
The advanced laser-lighting systems can be optionally fitted to BMW's groundbreaking BMW i8, which were delivered to customers starting from June.
The Berthold Leibinger Innovation Prize award recognises and promotes researchers and developers, who take new directions in the application of lasers. The award has been handed out every two years since 2002 for outstanding achievement in the development of forward-looking laser-light applications and is considered to be one of the most prestigious international innovation awards for laser technology. The jury of 11 judges is made up of internationally acclaimed scientists and leading managers of technology corporations.
Other prize winners this year include Dr. Alexander A. Oraevsky of Tomo Wave Laboratories, in recognition of his important work on laser opto-acoustic imaging applied to cancer diagnosis purposes and Prof. Hwa-yaw Tam, Prof. Siu Lau Ho as well as Dr. Shun-Yee Michael Liu of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for a laser-sensor network for monitoring railway traffic.
