BMW has presented its 20th Art Car to the public at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Designed by renowned New York-based contemporary Artist Julie Mehretu, the new exterior design sees the BMW M Hybrid V8 race car transformed into a work of art, and, following in BMW tradition, the car will soon compete in motorsport. This art car will be put to the test at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
For this 20th BMW Art Car, Mehretu is said to have transformed a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional representation, using her painting Everywhen as a starting point for the design of the art car.
The car makes use of an abstract visual form, created from digitally altered photographs, which are superimposed in several layers of dot grids, neon-coloured veils and the black markings characteristic of Mehretu's work.
The BMW M Hybrid V8 will be the first BMW M Motorsport prototype to compete at Le Mans since the BMW V12 LMR, which won the classic race in 1999. Artists including Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Esther Mahlangu, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Olafur Eliasson and Jeff Koons have all contributed to the current collection of BMW Art Cars.
