The recall affects BMW 1-Series models only in the United States, which were built from January to May 2010, as well as several 1-Series Coupes and Convertibles from 2008 to 2010. The German carmaker has also ordered a halt on sales until the problem can be fixed.
The cars involved are said to have insufficient clearance between the seat belt tensioners in the B-pillar and the insulating material surrounding it. In the event of a crash, the insulation could become overheated and catch fire.
BMW has advised dealers in the United States to inform affected owners and cease deliveries of cars until the problem is solved. Owners are also advised to contact their dealer to find out if their cars are affected and whether a repair is needed.
