BMW to continue using landfill methane at Plant Spartanburg

The BMW Group has announced that it will be extending its partnership with Ameresco, Inc. in the U.S.A to see continued use of methane gas from Palmetto Landfill to power its Spartanburg plant for a further eight years.
The group has already been utilising recycled methane gas from the landfill for 20 years, saving close to 9,200 tons of CO2 emissions each year. This gas is said to meet close to 20% of the energy needs of the Spartanburg plant.
Instead of imply burning off the methane, the captured gas is instead treated to remove moisture and impurities before being compressed at the landfill's Recovery and Compression Station, where it then travels through a 15.2km-long pipeline to BMW Plant Spartanburg.
Two gas turbines at the plant’s energy centre then make use of the gas to generate electricity and heat water for the facility.
