First BMW Neue Klasse model to drive product sustainability
06 Aug 2025|46 views
The new BMW iX3 - the brand's first Neue Klasse model - is said to demonstrate its holistic approach to product sustainability across the model's entire life cycle, with a focus on conserving resources and reducing its environmental footprint during its development.
As a result of this, the model offers a lower CO2e footprint and CO2e benefits, as well as a reduction in CO2e emissions thanks to the iX3's Gen6 battery cells being made of 50% secondary cobalt, lithium, and nickel materials.
The BMW Group is also focused on the use of innovative and secondary materials in other components.
For instance, 30% of the secondary raw material used for the engine compartment cover and the storage compartment under the front hatch is recycled maritime plastic. This post-consumer material consists of old fishing nets and ropes. Secondary aluminium accounts for 80% of the wheel carriers and swivel bearings as well as 70% of the cast aluminium wheels.
Designed and built according to the BMW iFactory principles, the new BMW Group plant in Hungary (where the iX3 is being produced) is fully focused on efficiency, digitalisation, and sustainability. It is the first BMW Group car factory that is operated and produces vehicles without using fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, under normal operating conditions, with its only energy source being electricity.
