Development of emissions-free drive technologies remains a top priority for the BMW Group. To this end, hydrogen vehicles play an important role in the decarbonisation of BMW's future offerings.
The German automobile manufacturer will pilot a small series of the BMW i Hydrogen NEXT from 2022, which is based on the current BMW X5 and will be equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell e-drive that emits only water vapour. BMW is leveraging its experience with existing fifth-generation e-drives to develop the vehicle.
Preparations are already underway at the firm's research facility in Landshut, Bavaria for the fuel cell system that will be used in the BMW i Hydrogen NEXT. The facility will oversee the production of components commonly used in the manufacturing of hydrogen fuel cells.
Hydrogen-powered vehicles generate the electrical energy needed from hydrogen stored in the vehicle. They are best suited for customers who frequently drive long distances or do not have regular access to electric charging infrastructure. Refuelling takes just a few minutes, as is the case with conventional fuels.
