The Land Rover Defender is no alien to the Red Cross. After having contributed to the development of this current Defender, Land Rover is now giving back to the charity organisation, announcing that a specially converted Defender 130,which was donated to the British Red Cross in commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, is set to enter active service under the Red Cross in North Wales.
The vehicle will aid the charity, of which Queen Elizabeth II is said to have been a patron for 70 years, in its support of those in difficult-to-reach communities such as the Snowdonia mountain range, Lleyn Peninsula and Isle of Anglesey.
The specially converted Defender 130 makes use of the latest communications equipment, including an enhanced 4G-connected antenna, a built-in phone, a VHF radio for communications and an upgraded telematics system with GPS tracking. It also sports a solar power system on its roof that charges an auxiliary battery to power accessories when the engine is not running so that the vehicle can stay connected for longer.
These features will be necessary when the vehicle traverses the Welsh region's coastline, mountainous terrain, and remotest locations. The Country of Wales is said to be the second-worst area in the U.K. for 4G data coverage in rural areas.
